Thread: Black Ark more beautiful then I thought

Pictures don't do this stone justice l. Much finer then I thought it would be. Super smooth to hone on. Came 100% flat and with a nice smooth surface. All I've got to do now is break it in and I'll do that but first I'm going to see if it will finish a razor as is.
It's an 8x3 which I've never had a stone this size before.

It really reminds me feedback wise of a MST Muller stone but not totally the same. I'm going to be selling my water stones and moving to oilstones for the time being, for me they provide greater feedback and if time isn't of the essence which it isn't in my case they can be perfect for use. It's a very YMMV thing.

Anyways enough rambling I just wanted to show you all my new stone. Cost an arm and almost half of a leg but it was worth it!

Yes I ordered Thursday night at 11:30 pm and it arrived today around 6:30pm. I could have dealt with a 8x2 but 8x3 is overkill to someone who's never really used a stone that size.

God looking stone. I'll have to get one someday.
I'm going to be near the Arkansas border later this month. Going to keep my eyes peeled.

Beautiful stone. I got a 6x3 black from Dans a few months ago and it's a stellar finisher.

That is a beauty! I went with the translucent 8x3 from Dan's and it too was crazy expensive, but I really love it. All my arks are 8x3's, IMO a great size for a noob such as myself to learn on.
Now where are your soft, Washita and hard Arks??

If your close enough go on down and meet Dan and his son , great people and you will be in store and hone heaven ,, I rode my bike over there and spend sone time with them and listened to stories then they took me back and showed me sone of the process ,, very cool day. ,, one of these days I,ll use mine ,,, but I do like looking at it. Been trying to get it shiny with and old tool to burnish it then I,ll try it. Tc

I don't need a soft or hard with a washita, can go directly from washita > hard black and that's all she wrote. One side of mine cuts fine and the other cuts coarser. My washita is sitting beside my black in the drawer

I'll edit on a nice vintage washita you can go from it straight to a black Arkansas. I'm not sure about the washita dans sells. They're not the same as the old vintage pike mine stones. (From Davew)

Thanks wid, I tried yesterday without it being broken in and then again today but followed it with a coticule. More then acceptable shave today

I will be breaking one side in when I stop working so much overtime I kind of like it as is right now it removes metal but refines a lot too. Not finisher quality yet!

Hope I,m not off topic too much, Dave, Wid on burnishing these Arks, do I need to use a chisel that is as wide as the stone? Or just work it all over as much as possible? I have had a Dans Black for over a year and have not touched it yet, I picked it up at there shop. But I want to get it ready to try. So any detailed info will help. Thanks guys. Tc
