That is an AWESOME story and with him giving you his coticule. He knows you'll treasure it and use it. Figure 8's eh? That would be interesting to see a video on him doing it. Another piece to the puzzle. Was this technique ever shown in any of the Barber Books that some people have?
Thank you for sharing this...... It made my day hearing this.
WillisIs it over there or over yonder?

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, the barber books,,, maybe someone else knows.
when I watched him do it slowly,, I thought of rolling "X's" strokes, just that he didn't lift the razor off the stone & he kept the strokes contained to a small area as you can see.

Thanks Russ for the link to the video that Doorsch posted in post # 20,,, this is not quite what I saw today,,, maybe because it was on a much smaller hone & was in person,,, I can't say this was the figure 8.

A Coticule Story.
Again Interesting...i love old figure 8 stories especially from older Barbers ;-)
Hirlau can you ask him next time, just because it might be interesting...what about Spine leading strokes ? Did he ever heard of to use them in the latest finish stage ?
The Video i added was just the intention to try out a certain figure 8 stroke, and yeah it worked for me. I did not experience any worse behavior then doing it as "normal" with the edge leading...Last edited by doorsch; 06-07-2015 at 01:23 PM.

Could be a fancy way of doing circles.. That said, if the blade shaves well after the TLC, who cares!

My imagination says lots of small figures eights would create smaller saw-toothing than longer bi-directional- or larger circular strokes and, at the same time would tend to make toothiness more vertical than left- or right oriented. Does that make sense? I would expect a keener, smoother edge with more cutting and less chopping than my longer conventional strokes or larger circles would allow.
I have found small figure-eighting plus forward/backward motion to be, at first, like trying to rub your head and pat your tummy at the same time while hopping on onw foot."We'll talk, if you like. I'll tell you right out, I am a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."
