Stone progression
Greetings!
I have a honing question for those far wiser than I...
I currently use a chosera pro 1k to set the bevil, followed by naniwa 3k and 8k. I finish with diamond and CrOx sprayed strops. The edges I get are fine, but I am looking for a little more refinement. So, on to my question:
My next stone purchase will be a naniwa 12k, but should I get a 5k as well? Does jumping from 3k to 8k hinder my edges in any way?
Thanks!

Nope, that jump is fine. I use a 1-5-10K progression myself & Alx goes from a 1K or 2K directly to his finisher with slurry. It's just a matter of the time it takes to remove the scratches from the low grit with the higher grit stone. Some might want to use many stones in small steps and others might prefer larger steps. After all, we could set bevels on a 30K Shapton and already be finished.. it might take us two or three months but we could do it.
Also, that 12K SS is a fine choice for a finisher.

Thanked: 3795Personally, I think your 1, 3, 8k progression is better than the alternative 1,5,8k progression because the 3 k is better able to eliminate the 1k scratches. Though I prefer including the 5k in that progression, you are just fine with what you have.

I have the Naniwa SS 3/10 combo. So I use a 1, 3, 10 progression. There are probably many ways to improve that progression also but it works fine for me! I don't think a 5k will do much difference in your progression, it is more a matter of taste I guess. A 12K as a finisher would probably be a good way to go, I'll also get one of those one day. My thought on the matter, but Im not nearly as experienced as most guys here!

I didn't know they made a 3/10 or I would have been temped to get that and stop there! I am going to spend the money that was set aside for a 5k on a new brush instead and pick up the 12k only.

Thanked: 4I'll skip the diamond and introduce the naniwa 12k that is a great honing stone. Then crox on balsa and very small leather strop.

I use the same as Tack, 1k, 5k, 10k Naniwa Specialty stones. Works for me.

You may want to stay a little longer and lighter on the 8k and skip the diamond. I can get a really smooth edge like that. I do use a 12k but that is because I like the added sharpness. The 12k doesn't add a whole lot more to how smooth the edge is as far as my face is concerned but definitely a noticeable difference in how keen. When I added the crox pasted strop that definitely made an improvement on both how smooth and keen the edge was.
Good luck ymmv
