Mounting a thin waterstone?
Sorry for the constant questions, I am trying to learn
I have been working on my honing, hence the stone progression question I asked yesterday. I have been using the 3k stone quite a bit, and it is getting quite thin. Is there a way to mount it to a harder surface to make sure I can use the entire stone without it breaking? If this is something you have done, what did you use for the mount and glue?
Thanks!

Thanked: 4827There are are variety of things you can do. The most likely thing that sounds like it will work for you is to epoxy it to a block of wood. Any stable hardwood should do the trick. Avoid woods that tend to move a lot and you will be just fine.

Thanked: 3215Yea, wood has been used for years, but I think I would look at a piece of cutting board or thick Plexi glass, or Trex.

Marble or slate tile cut to size would be my choice.

Thanked: 2591If you mount on wood use species that is water resistant. I have used Cedar on all my mounted hones and have had zero problems. Even though cedar is very water proof, I still sealed the bases before I glued the stones to them. For glue I used Gorilla Glue.

I like the idea of a tile, but I don't have a way to cut it myself so I might go for cedar like Stefan mentioned. They grow all over the place here so I might even be able to go harvest a free piece!
Stefan- you said you used gorilla glue, which I do have. Doesn't the glue soak into the surfaces you are glueing? That doesn't cause a problem when you get to the end?
Thanks!

Yes, that was my question thanks.
I had another idea to add to the party... Can you glue the remainder of your stone to the bottom of a new stone? In my mind that would keep it stable and is no different that the combo stones that are made!
