Thread: Pair of Eschers

Just received these today safely from two separate wins on the bay.
Sealed the label that remained on the smaller one with varnish and lapped em flat in short order on some 400 g wet paper.

The bigger one had no label so was a gamble but sure seems near identical to the labelled one. Maybe slightly darker, and looks like it was used for a bit of breadknifing. Same slurry effect on the paper, and same feel dry. Will test them against steel for the true test
Got em both for under 2 bills, shipped. Now I'm googling escher honing videos. I have them lapped now till there is just a bit of edge dings, (the pics are as received) but chamfered it so it's not going to interfere with my blades anyway. Figured I'd rather stop sanding away all that precious grit for the sake of a few edge nicks once it was flat again. Soft stone, both seemed to abrate quickly on the 400 wet..way faster to lap than my phig or Charnley.

Great looking hones....I've refreshed enough blades on mine now that it's the only edge for me.

Last time I finished a razor, I used the Nani 12k as usual, then went crox, and then finished off on the Escher so the last thing to touch the edge was the stone, maybe crazy, but was the shave was just fantastic - looking forward to hearing what you think.

That stone that is longer in size, I liked. Congratulations on your purchase.

Nice pair of thuringians, congrats to that find. The Escher & Son label isn't seen quite frequently, it was only used in a short timeframe.

Nice buy, often you can just flip the stone and use the bottom side, they are usually pristine, (for the unlabeled one).

They are only considered Escher’s if labeled, otherwise Thüringen’s. Really unless you are re-selling it does not matter, only performance matters. I have labeled Escher’s and many unlabeled Thüringen’s and they work equally well.

Can’t tell from the pics are they the Blue Green or Yellow Green?

I like the Escher & Sons label, it is rare. I find the best edges off a well honed and finished 8 or 12k edge. Great touch up stones with a lite slurry.

Thanks for the feedback on em gents. I would call these blue green, and have lapped them down and so far just tried a dull kamisori on the non labelled thuri for a few test strokes.
Nice feedback from the stone for sure. My kamisori fit perfectly across on a 45 deg heel forward angle.
And pretty fast stone too. Within 40 strokes I was shining up the edge all along the backside of the kami. I need to do some more work on the blade, get its geometry right once more. But it was just a test, and passed very well.
Will feedback on the shave one I use this on one of my western blades still being honed up.

Honed up the last two razors of a set I was working on and I used these two stones on them.
The Friday blade was progressed from a coti onto the larger thuri with slurry diluted down to clear with 40 blade pressure x strokes. Gave a nice polish and tpt. Shave to follow.
Saturday blade was straight from a norton 8k to the escher labelled hone, again with light slurry, diluted to clear after 20 circles, followed by 40 blade weight X's.
That Saturday blade was sticking to the hone by suction during those last X's and that's always been a good sign in my honing sessions. Nice to have happening on a narrow stone. Tree topping arm hairs with ease. Will be shaving with em this weekend and look forward to testing the results.
