Thanked: 3215If it works for you, rock on, but most new guys will use too much pressure and not even know the grit of their stone.
What they think is 600 is really 220. That combined with pressure leads to chipping at the finishing stone, a common new honer problem.
Do what works for you...

Thanked: 498I love my Nortons. I started out with the 4-8 combo, but absolutely hated flipping over all the time so I bought individual 4K, 8K Norton stones and gave away the combo at a razor meet. The separate Nortons make my life a whole lot better and since I'm one of the very few who cant stand honing, any advantage is appreciated.

My Norton 4/8k has arrived. Below is a closeup of the stone, as well as a shot of it and the materials used to lap it.
The 4k side is made in Italy, 8k in the U.S.A.
Norton must have handled the situation I read about in a few threads regarding the 4k side, because it lapped smooth really fast. I doubt I lost a 16th of an inch.

Norton 4/8K followed by chromox pasted strop is all Lynn and many others used before they started toying with fancy stones.

I've already re honed three of my straights with it, LOL, though I've only shaved with one of those so far.
It was a good shave. Decent edge, but I can see where I can improve.
Thoroughly enjoyed the process.Mike

I started with a Norton 4k, 8k also. However I added a Naniwa 12K & a 1K and honed with . those for a year or so. I found out that the 4K got to feeling very gritty so I moved on and I predict you will also. For the time being they will serve you well as they did me. I would use the 4K to set the bevel if you cannot afford a 1K. That 600 is pretty course. I use a 600K on knives only
