Thread: "Brazilian hone" gegraphic/geological origin.

Have anyone a clue from where the so "once upon a time called Brazilian hone" where mined?

Not a clue however everything (just about) mined in Brazil comes from the Minas Gerais State so I'd start there.

You are a bit mistaken, pal. We have mines of about anything spreaded through the country. Amost every Brazilian State have some kind of slate and schist surfacing. I lurked 14 slate mines near Goiânia, but the slate they provide is very soft with coarse grain. Some time ago, I drunk a beer on a small village bar, west of Goias, and its balcony was made of a nice polished greenish and hard slate. I`ll manage to go back there to search for the rock origin to get a sample. Good pictures of what was called brazilian hone would be very useful to compare.

You should difference these...as far as i remember was the Brazilian Hone a type of hard material because it was used as a Groundstone which then was used with a Coticule Rubber...lets call it a type of Quartz or Novaculite, even if iam not sure about the right term actually...

This one from the catalogue seemed to be a slate type stone, even not beein sure if the origin in the older times really was Brazil..

I found some German Sources naming that going upwards from Aráio there is a "whitestone" which the population used for sharpening stones. Also he mentioned a darker black and very very hard material which was overrunned from water when he visited the location.

Ha, I can read Diamantina quarries on the label (Thank you, Doorsh). Thebigspendur, you are right, Diamantina is Minas Gerais (about 650km from me). If I found something interesting, you'll have your share.

I have found several very nice hones in my area. I think you should just start experimenting with some of the rock you find.

Brazil is a big country and like the U.S of course there are quarries and mines all over the place. I only mentioned Minas because it is a very famous district and just about every mineral and rock known to man can be found there.

If you go there you better be armed and careful. Many precious minerals are found there and many who go there to find their riches never return. Parts are lawless.

Thank you, Thebigspendur. I already contacted some companies who dig out schist, slate and quartz there. Let`s see what they have. Photos sent are apparently of ordinary "ardosia" common lammelar slate. I pretend to make commercial contacts, not stepping on anyone`s land
A photo or description of what was sold in the past as "genuine Piedra Brazil" would be awesome. The material showed above says nothing about color, grain or texture.

I could be wrong, but I believe the Brazilian Hone is a term for the go to hone you use when you are about to provide a Brazillian Shave...if you get my drift.
