Question How many times have we recommended the NORTON 4K/8K COMBO?

How many times has the N 4k -8k combo stone been recommended as the best primary stone for beginners or anyone else for that matter? I am proving that recommendation to be correct as we speak.

I'm packing up my essential belongings for a move to an apartment and selling the rest of my stuff through an auction house. All my stones [50 or so] are packed up for the move with the exception of 1 stone. The Norton 4k/8k. That way, on moving day I need to throw only one stone into my kit and I'm outta here.

Keeping one stone aside for weekly use was an easy choice. I simply chose the most versatile stone I have. Of course I could have chosen the Coticule but I'll save that choice for the next time I move. At this stage of the game, I just preferred the 4k/8k.

Which of your stones would you have chosen in my situation?

If only one stone,,,, my Coticule ,,, I can work on the blue side & finish on the yellow.
Plus,,, the Coticule is a sacred stone,,,,

For maintenance - weekly or whatever - I use whatever finishing stone was used when the blade was honed, so pick one.. any will do.

If you want versatility, well, that depends upon what you mean by versatile. The coticule that you mentioned will do a better job at the low grit end of the spectrum than the 4/8K if you need to repair minor damage and can produce a finer edge in the right hand. On the other hand, if you will need to set bevels, a Ik and that coticule might be better (after all, the 4/8K is really two stones.) Now if I could have three stones.. wait, get a grip.. OK, I'm done.

Aha.. I like Hirlau's idea, a combo coticule. Use the BBW side with yellow slurry for speed, leave the yellow side prepped for finishing only. One stone.

I have great faith in fools - self confidence my friends call it.

Don't have a cpmbo synthetic so the combo coticule would have to be it.

Coincidentally, I recommended the combo to a new SR user just today. That's how I got started with the hones.

I think my choice would be my 12k nani. It seems I always fall back to that for my touchups. And lately that's all my rotation needs is an occasional touch up.
