Looks like a curb stone from #920?

that could be.. Was thinking could have been a house number. It was being used as a stone as it was in a home made wood box. Also has a screw in it but not all the way through.

I suppose flatten the good side and see what it and the slurry look like? Give it a try?

A very hard Arkansas or a diamond plate hone (the credit card size works fine)

It looks like slate to me. I would say flatten about half of it with a DMT and that, in itself, should create a pile of slurry. If you still think it is slate, you might try a thurri slurry stone to give it a try? If you like it, I suppose you could do the whole thing.
    It's huge!
