    You mark the half way point on the blade, so that you can only hone the top half of the razor with the 12k. As you hone, just keep the marker line, on the edge of the stone as a guide. Then compare the stria on both halves. If both stones are in fact 12k or the same grit, the stria should look the identical.

    If the stria on one half is finer than the other, then they are not the same grit, and you will know now know, which one should be used first in progression.

    Have you used it, or any of the other hones? That really is the only way to properly assess them.

    Lol yeah I have sent back all the pro series stones and kept the kuromaku series... Me being only 30 days into sharpening and everything I really don't know how to asses them myself. I've been getting a lot of help on these threads great community. i got family out in faribult mn, I love it over there.

    I don't recall ever disagreeing with you on anything before but this one will not stand!

    I don't consider the 2k to be the odd man out. The 2k is the best hone for removing the scratches of the 1k, given that even the grit of the 2k hone is already half the size of the grit of the 1k hone.

    The Kitayama is a good 8K hone that can be used on straight razors. No modern hone is made for straight razors.
