My new CF
Here is my new Charnley Forest. The stone is incredibly beautiful to the eye, but even better, it gives an amazing edge; comparable to, if not better than my best vtg Thuringian, and that for the price of one third of it..... Only drawback is that it is incredibly slow. This hone has never been exposed to oil, but I am considering to lightly dress it. Would oil make the hone faster and produce even finer edges?

Congratulations on your CF, many are tool grade so you lucked out. These hones are incredibly hard, oil is not going to make it any faster but the edges could be finer.

Thanked: 3795Before committing to oil, you could try Smith's honing solution. It is water soluble.

Thanked: 3795Because it is water soluble, you can play with the ratios of water and solution to alter the viscosity on the hone. I usually start with a 50/50 mix and then gradually add more water to it but experiment with it and see what you like.

Thanked: 3795I suppose so but rather than diluting slurry, which is reducing the concentration of the slurry, the dilution of the honing solution is a reduction of the viscosity of the liquid.

Glycerin/water mix and glycerin alone work well too, which one would depend on where you want the feedback to be.
