found this hone yesterday and from what i gather is a razor hone. are they used dry or with lather/water? would it hurt to lap it?

The 79 is a dry hone. The instructions for it specify that it should not be filled or treated in any way. It also says to keep the surface clean and free of dirt, oils, or soaps of any kind. For that reason, I would not recommend lather.

Do you have the cleaning stone that was supplied with it? That was to be used with both it and the hone submerged in water.

I would not lap it unless it is grossly deformed, but you do have two surfaces to work with so you could lap the worse side and then compare them. Because this was to be maintained with a cleaning stone, I would feel less hesitant about lapping this particular stone though.

I use mine dry or a little moist. I have this grout brush I bought at Home Depot. Plastic bristles and they have more backbone than a wire brush. Cleans anything without scratching or in this case without leaving more metal stuck in the pours.

Lapping one is a task to say the least. What's harder than carborundum ? Not much :<0) It will clog a diamond plate quick and make that a cleaning job in itself.

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

A ScotchBrite pad, another barber hone, an Arkansas hone, or any other hard hone.

The Carborundum #79 is the same as the Aloxite #79 dry razor hone. Both are made “by” Carborundum Co.
