    Default Hone ID

    Hiya fellas,

I bought a hone that was marketed as a BBW
now, I received the hone, it looked too 'clean' and perfect to be a BBW; I drew grid-marks on it and started to lap
to my surprise the slurry didn't look much like that from a BBW

I'm only familiar with BBWs and Coticules, that's as far as my knowledge about hones go

The stone looks very solid grey and produces a light grey / white grey slurry

I took one pic, dry, in my process of lapping,
and one with slurry on it

    Here's what it looks like:

If better or more pictures are needed, I will do my best to provide better photos

    Thanks fellas!

From your description I would be guessing more towards slate. Can you say more how/where from you got the hone?

Agree it's a slate. Looks like a Thüringian. If it's a really good thuri, then it's should be able to finish an edge after 8k with 15-20 x-strokes.

It could be a Chinese hone. It's slower, but ok. It should finish with 50-70 xstrokes.

You just have to try it out. :-)

Found it at an antique store in germany
the side of the hone has a name scratched in it on both sides,

I just remember I have a boxed celebrated water razor hone somewhere, I might have to compare it to this one, see how it compares

What color is it, one photo looks dark grey the other green? It does not look like a BBW. It also looks large, what size is it? Can you take a close up photo of the ends and sides?

Is it hard or a soft stone, If hard with a white slurry, it may be an Ark.

20 cm by 4,5 cm with 1 cm thickness
    or
7.9 inches by 1.6 inches and 0,4 inch thick

the smaller one is taken out of his wooden box that has a red label "the celebrated razor water hone" and it's dimensions are: 11 cm by 3 cm and 1,4 cm thick ; 4,3 inches by 1,2 inches and 0,4 inch thick. It might have some glue residue left on the sides

Not sure about hard or soft, but they take a while to be lapped, but so did my coticules, so might be more about the grit of my lapping device; Not sure how to tell whether a stone is soft of hard

The darker parts on the hones are little unlapped parts

My phone doesn't seem to be able to take high detailed pics, (I would have loved to take close-up highly detailed pics of the surface n'at, but alas) and the dirty lens can puts black dots on my pics. Unfortunately this is the best I can do for now, I hope these are of any help
    thanks for taking a look:

From the photo, the surface appears to be homogenous. Coticules and BBWs are heterogenous because of the garnets. Here is a photo ChrisL posted several years ago.

If the smaller hone came out of that box, then it's a Thuringian, which is a good form of honing slate. The other one looks similar and likely also is a Thuringian.

    Congrats!
