Default Thuringian stone vs 12k naniwa

I own a thuringian stone and I heard that it's pretty hard to beat a 12k naniwa as a razor finish stone so I was wondering if anyone knew how they compare. My thuringian stone gives a very clean comfortable shave so I was wondering if the 12k would do any better.

Hard to say. A naniwa 12k is an awfully nice stone, but a good thuri is as well. My guess is the 12k might leave a bit more 'crisp' edge, but it depends on the thuri. This is where the synthetics are cool because they are consistent. All the same. Natural stones vary to an extent, and some are better than others. I like having both. Which I use depends on my mood, and/or the particular razor.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Aaron if you enter your location, or do a search in the member's list, you may be able to find someone who is near enough to you that may be able to give you a chance to try that hone in person.

I some ways they are similar, and some, very different. Both can finish, but the Super Stone is much more versatile and can even do some repair, it is that aggressive.

The finish as said are different, with the Super Stone a bit more aggressive, the Vintage Thuringian smoother. All vintage Thuringians can finish, but there is a bit of difference in the stones. A lot depends on the color of the Thuringian, most vintage stones are finisher, (not so for MST) and work best, after a well finished 8 or 12k edge.

Is it a better edge? That is very subjective a lot depend on the razor prep, the razor and the honer… Almost anyone can get a good edge off a Super Stone.

Monitor variations make it really hard to assess color. It's pretty much irrelevant though because most colors can produce a good edge. The general assumption is that the yellows and greens are softer and "better," but a dark blue also can give a good edge.

If you want to do a search for local members, since "local" is a relative term in Texas, you can follow these steps.

click on Community in the top tool bar
then Member List in the drop down
above the right side of the list, click Search Members
and then Advanced Search in the drop down
    enter in your search parameters

I tried a couple search options and found that "whoever" (that is his username) is in Austin. You might want to contact him by PM.

Well in my experience with both these stones I feel they actually compliment each other. The Thury is a very slow cutter you really can challenge its abilities trying to bring back a dull razor. On the other hand it gives forth comfort and smoothness with the best of them. When done well the thury edge is a joy to shave with. The Naniwa 12k is a performer as far as edge refinement and keeness and much faster cutter really amazing in that regards actually for its grit. When I say complimentary I mean to use the tool that does one thing best. Naniwa will get your blade really sharp and crisp almost harsh then follow up with Thury and all the nasties melt away and you have a lovely shaving instrument, sharp and smooth what we all crave.
    Don't drink and shave!
