Found a Coti in the wild yesterday (pic heavy)
I went to an antique shop yesterday and saw a dirty old rock in a display case and I felt obliged to check it out. I found the lady with the keys and she opened it up and hot damn if it wasn't a coticule. For only $9.95 too. Boy I was grinning from ear to ear. It was dished pretty dang bad but after a while, a long while, on the DMT I got her straightened out. There's about a 1mm dimple near one edge which I think I'll try to fill with some CA glue. I think she's awfully pretty. And I still can't believe I found one in the wild Anyone have an idea on ID?
Just a little far from flat...

Thanked: 2284That's a great score. The colouring on it is very nice and probably really pops when it has some water on it. Lots of usable material left too which means lapping shouldn't be an issue. Congrats!!

The coloring looks like a 'La Dressant Au Bleu' that I have...my best and hardest Coticule finisher.

Thanked: 3795The coloring looks like...
Dude, (sorry I'm not a dude kind of guy but seriously, dude) you found this rock in an antique store, which means your rock is old. Now, obviously, all rocks are old, but yours was mined way before anybody bothered making note of veins from just one mine.
For that reason, my idea for an ID is...
it's a coticule.
Have fun with it!

Thanked: 3795I looked at your photos again and this time noticed the background which allowed me to see that you have other coticules. THIS is where some of the fun comes in. ALL of these rocks perform a little differently. Personally, I have never found a coticule that I did not like, which is why I have somewhere between 30 and 40 coticules, because whether they are fast or slow, or a bit more coarse or fine, they ALL provide a perfectly good shaving edge. I have several coticules out on loan to others, and when I go to meet-ups I usually bring several coticules to allow people to hone on a variety of coticules to see just how much they can vary. I do this because I like letting others try out this extremely traditional form of razor sharpening.
