Thanked: 1587Me too!! Chocolate Moose.
Honestly, as others have said it is a bit of a rabbit hole, especially the naturals with all their subtle (and some not so subtle) variations. If you can find someone knowledgeable in the area, I think you'd enjoy a good Jnat. I've been a little out of that loop now for a while, but I think the level of knowledge here on the forum is at a point where you could fairly safely go down that rabbit hole with some pretty nice outcomes if you so wished.

Thanked: 3215No, not really. A 12k super stone and razor quality Chrome Oxide edge is hard to beat.
High grit stones and nano grit paste/sprays are a bit quicker and maybe a bit keener, but a WOW difference, no. As said you can go for different, but still not a big WOW, probably a more comfortable shave.
The mistake a lot of people make is that keener (nano grit polish) is better, but you can only get so sharp, then comfort becomes an issue. I doubt we will see stones in much higher grits than we have now, our faces can handle it. I feel the GS20 edge is harsh, and use CBN to mellow the edge, which kind of defeats the use of the 20 and certainly if you are just maintaining a hand full of razors it is not cost effective.
So much of finishers are subjective and a lot will depend on your razors and your technique. Once you get in the 12-20k in stone grits the edge is pretty straight, add a .50um paste (Chrome Oxide), you are at the 20/30k level edge, the difference in .50 to .25um does not make that much of a difference in the shave, maybe a bit smoother and .10um can be too much.
What Glen is offering is a no brainer, pack the car and get on the road, take a hand full of razors and try as many finisher as you can, then decide which direction you want to go.
An inexpensive way to test this sharpness theory is with film. Film will produce a very uniform, high nano grit, super straight edge, quickly and easily but after 1um (16-20k) comfort becomes an issue, .3um is about 30K depending on which chart you read. High grit naturals are probably in the 12-20k range, but will provide more comfort due to the abrasive shape but can take more skill and time to max out the full potential.
Interestingly in the last 5 years, a lot has happened, but not a lot has changed, stones used for hundreds of years are still the go to stones for shaving.

Gentlemen, I am truly impressed...not as much with the answers to the question, (though good information for my purpose), as I am with your individual and collective ability to utilize a question about hones as a reason to caravan to Glen's for a party...And I'm Proud, Proud that my question served a better good. Gentlemen, this is male-genius at it's best. I salute you!!!

Trying to steer the thread back on track: I have really enjoyed my Nakayama after the Escher. I never got on really well with chromium oxide, I prefer CBN from Jende Industries. My 2cts.
