The more experienced guys are the ones that haven't seen or used them. They are not fine enough for shaving, and too slow compared to anything else available that offers a similar edge, especially the wide range of man made stones around. There are lots of threads on Welsh slates, search and you'll find many.

It seems that the guys here think they are worth a go. Around the 8K-10K mark, that's not too bad especially for the price.

Thanked: 481I feel like if I were in the UK I would be all over that. For the price it's worth a shot, and if it didn't work out you wouldn't be out a whole lot. I mean even if it isn't a good 'finisher' it would probably still be a good intermediate hone. But since I'm in America, with the exchange rate and shipping it's a little pricey to be taking a gamble with.

Thanked: 3215They are nice stones, he has sold a boatload of them, they are a decent size, at a decent price, they are good for learning to use slurry, some can produce a shaveable edge in competent hands, they most probably are not 8K or close. So if you buy one, know that going in.
If you want to learn to hone or maintain a razor, do so on synthetic a 12k. Synthetics will give you a foolproof shaveable edge every time, then once mastered experiment with natural stones, there are tons of them out there, some vintage slates that are 8K or better, some much better.
There have been many new frustrated guy threads using these stones trying to lean to hone on the cheap, doubt many are using them as finisher now.
Your $15 would be better spent on some good Chromium Oxide from SRD, now that, you will use for the rest of your life…
