Thanked: 481Yea, I agree/understand. I should have a better edge coming off the 8k than I currently do, and once I get that edge it will really start to unlock what my finishing stones are capable of. Not that I want to be lazy and stop honing at the 8k mark.
I feel like I'm on the cusp of a major breakthrough. Don't pee on my happy parade!

I (personally) really dislike the 4k Norton on razors, though the 8k is very nice for a synthetic (since no one asked)
Anyways- get yourself an atoma Diamond plate if you can- It isn't a dia-flat, but it's more than flat enough, and I wouldn't want to lap under 6k synthetic with a diaflat on the regular basis anyways. ($$$)
what are your finishing stones? Botan goes down 6k and Ban and Yae botan go lower.

Thanked: 481I've got a 1"x5" Arkansas Black that puts a pretty nice edge on my razors, and I have a Guangxi hone. As I'm sure you know, it cuts awfully slow, but the edge is pretty decent. I've also got a 220/1k norton I use for bevel setting, but the more I play with it, the more I agree with you on the Norton 4k. Feels way too rough even after I re-lapped it and the 8k with 320 grit, 600 grit, 1k and 2k grit paper. Well, it gets the job done for now. When I've worn it slam out I probably won't pick up another Norton.
But, after lapping the hones with sandpaper I got the edge I was after! It felt like I could've stopped at 8k, stropped the razor, and got a nice shave. Goes without saying that I took it all the way through, and hit it with a little CrOx (10 strokes) before stropping and shaving. Worked nicely, I'm happy with the results.
