Looks like there is a lot of stone to be had for free if one would go there
    Brynestein fra Eidsborg

It says its quartz shale with feldspar and mica. Don't know how good it will be.

I don't know either. I would still like one though. My norvegian is a little rusty. But I think they article says that there is two kinds of stone that they quarry for whetstonesale. If you should happen to find a source please let us know

It says the harder variety were often exported and the softer one used locally in telemark. Says nothing about which was cosidered the best, or finest. Apparantly they exported 750000 stones over the years.

I was only about 10km away from that place a few months back.

I'm working on an iron ore plant in the Pilbara at the moment. I noticed some of the rock around the place had a slate-like appearance to it. The rock is layered with grey and some iron ore red and when tapped sounds very hard. I picked some pieces out wth the idea of getting them sliced and trying them as hones. When I get around to it I'll let you know how it went.

    That's be gold!
Super keen to hear if we got anything viable out here mate. Hand up, albeit it from an East Coaster if you want a second opinion on any on the Pilbara stone.

I'm waiting on the call-up to start a new contract there. I should be back in business by mid to end of February, so I'll keep you posted. Hopefully there's a core sampling plant somewhere on site that can slice it for me. If not I'm going to have to take it on the plane! It's magnetite, by the way.

I don't know if this is the right thread or not, but, I am trying to locate a Pilbara Hone. When I get mine, I'm going to 180-90-60-45-23-12-4-1 slurry sequence with 108 one directional strokes.

Are you sure it's magnetite? That stuff is always black. Usually hematite is red. If a magnet will stick to it then it's magnetite.
