Actually shaving with those is a bit too harsh for my personal feeling....

i always use water on my hones, tried once with oil but it was awfull to clean after finished to hone. water/glycerine; sounds good but need to have glycerine.

by the way, do you have any suggestion for a finishing hone ? i've already a DT and purple lynn, i'm satisfated but as i look for a la lune and still not found one, i seek an other hone for a step after purple.

Smith’s honing solution, (water soluble) works well and washes off easily, as does mineral oil with a degreaser (simple green) or Dawn dish soap. Sometimes a short soak is needed for oil.

There are really many around, the ones i really like actually would be (with no specific ranking):

- Vermio Genuine Greek Razor Hone
- Charnley Forest (some actual good offers on auction sites)
- Apache Strata USA
- Colorado Slate (Sedimentry Stone) from Gabriel
- A Jnat set with Naguras and f.ex. a Ozuku, Nakayama Kiita, Shouboudani or Wakasa
- La Lune or Special Stone

all stones where i like the finish i get from those...

Thanks for these. Actually the most attractive prices are for charnley forest at this time. Bit I'll wait some more to see if there will be some better offers. So for a while I'll go on with purple Lynn finishing and strop.

The Vermio is a decent price as well.

CF is always a little gamble, I've been in the quarry and had my hands on uncut stone. And there is a lot of variation of rock in a small area. Some is superfine others are slightly more coarse typical of all natural stone. If you can make sure the auction for CF has great pictures so you can gauge the surface. CF is also very common on Ebay.co.uk most of the time you will see 3-4 listed guaranteed rocks for a big price, then 3-4 stones that you can make an educated guess about.

UK stone terminology is strange. Unless you know what a hone is the common term would be "sharpening stone", "whetstone", "wet stone", or "oil stone". A private lister may not know to use the term hone as it is not a commonly used word in every day language. So search using many different descriptions. Also unless you know it's a CF a lister will probably list it as vintage, old, rare, or antique without specifying a stone type. If you want the bargains learn what they look like and take a cheap gamble 8inch stones are not uncommon, nor are stones with rough sides and uncut bottoms.
