I just took delivery of a new standard coticule from Ardennes.
It feels nice and smooth when I lapped it and then hit it with 2000 grit paper, but when I run a razor over it - holy is it EVER rough!!! Feels super bumpy / gravelly.
Weird....

What is the edge like after honing? That's probably your best test.
It mated with a Carborundum on it's way to you,,,,:D
Maybe the 2000 grit transferred into the Coticule, your fingers might not feel the difference, but your edge will,,,
What are you lapping it with?
still have to shave test tomorrow. I have a smaller bout from Ardennes and its buttery smooth. * I have a small La Veinette that I bought off easy from a fellow in Holland, but it looks like that has been lost / stolen in the post between Holland and Canada....it was supposed to be here in 6 days and its been 20.... I was really looking forward to trying that. :(
Hi Euclid.
DMT 325, then 2000 grit wet dry and then slurry three times...
Hiralau - if that has happened - what's the 'treatment' to fix it???
Lap the heck out of it, them Carborundums don't penetrate very deep,,,,:D
Seriously,,, there must be a transfer from either the DMT, is it old/worn, or the wet/dry.
Is this the only razor you have felt this with?
I wouldn't even bother lapping with sand paper...... I only use my DMT 325 on my coticules...... Which works fine.
If you have a smaller coti or a slurry stone..... Use that all over the coticule too.....after lapping it with the DMT.
Do you have any pics of the coticule in question?
If it's one of the newer vein coticules from Las Petas - I have heard this same thing from several guys now. Reports are that it doesn't hurt the edge though.
Regardless of what you used to lap it, the best thing to smooth out the surface is your coticule bout.
Indeed, some of the newly mined layers in Regné especially Les Petas and even more La Veille Rouge feel a bit hard and rough compared to the oher veins, especially compared to the smooth layers like La Veinette.
Apart from the honing feeling, they are great hones though and good finishers. It is just the honing feeling that needs some getting used to.
But it could also be a problem with the coticule. Some phoos might be helpful....
Don't get carried away with it. It should not take much more than a normal slurrying to smooth it out. If you decide to do a lot more than that, then at least save the slurry!
I do not have a coticule that feels excessively rough but I think it certainly is possible given what ekretz said about this particular vein. It is likely that the feedback from this hone will not be altered significantly by any type of surface prep.
I have a coticule that feels like that too, haven't done much honing on it since it feels so weird
I should test it some time
I've lapped it quite a bit, but that doesn't seem to change anything
A scotch brite sponge is good for pulling grit from a stone and smoothing it a bit, on synthetics it is good for a quick refresh of a loaded up stone.
I will post some photos today. Thanks for all the input
During our meeting in Adennnes last autumn I had few hones which were behaving in simmilar manner as you describe from new. however after I relapped them on Maurizio's DMT and used them on knife steel is smoothened most of it out.
And the edges are beveled nicely ?
So here are some photos.
these are the dry stones - bout and rectangular

this is the wet bout

the right side - with the green swirly bits - seems rougher.
Have you tried honing on the bout? How does that feel?
That is almost definitely a Les Petas. Many have that swirly pattern.
very very smooth with the bout
That vein is supposed to have a bit of that odd feel going on afaik. I have a tan coti with orange in it that feels like I am honing on a wet cinder block and it does no harm. it's smoothing out a bit with use but it seems to have mostly plateaued. so long as you aren't getting very deep stray scratches or edge chipping I would think nothing of it.
Aha, I have the same feel on my coti and it looks a lot like your rectangular one, must be the same vein
Interesting
Les Petas eh?
I have made good experiences using a very hard stone like Llyn Idwal or Charnley Forest to rub the Les Petas smooth. Using a bit pressure does not harm. Still a bit grainy, but I get real good eges now.
I have a new hone front Ardennes with the same feel not sure what vein it's from.

It is a nice stone but can't get use to the feel.

Here is a vintage and it's real smooth.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...bea8390934.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...59fbb93521.jpg
Not sure about what vein it's from.

Here is a "soft" Les Petas, very good sharpening feeling, a bit grainy but nice.Attachment 234056
This is a very hard Les Petas. I have a little problem with this stone. Normally, very small garnets dissolve out while honing, usually you can not notice it. With this stone it is different, garnets can protrude. This can cause damage to the blade. When I make slow strokes without pressure, sometimes I can hear a metallic click and can feel how the blade stucks. A very hard slurrystone can help, but it is a real risk to hone on this stone.Attachment 234059
This is a standard grade (200x60) I purchased last week. Very very smooth and nice feeling, a completely different stone . Unfortunately I can´t reach a good shaving edge. It is quite hard and a stellar fast stone for kitchen knives and tools.

Interesting thread. The les petas do have that trade mark blueish swirl to them most of the time. I've got one coming from Gary Haywood that looks different then these les petas. He told me it's super smooth and different from the other les petas he's had the pleasure to hone on which in some cases were very scratchy/rough and he had sent some back to ardennes.. this confirms my suspicions about the vein although further testing is required to make a generalization on edge quality. That being said I've got one coticule that "feels" rougher than the others. A La nouvelle vein that gives excellent edges so it's yet to be proved without a doubt that this rough feeling is detrimental to the razors edge. Maybe mentally but unless it's got toxic inclusions I suspect it is not harmful.
I may have to order another les petas although I've got so many other great coticules I've got to test first.
Mine definitely looks like those posted in the couple of posts above, like Hacker7's and the 2nd picture of Sebrazor's
It feels very harsh, coarse and bad honing on it
I bought it a while ago, and am sort of concluding I wasted my money; I don't really dare to put my razor on that stone
