Shapton Glass 16k
So i was watching some video's today on honing and came across one with the Shapton Glass and lapping.
To my utter shock they began lapping the white section.... the penny dropped, i've been honing on the wrong side.
Now I've only had the 16k for a couple of weeks and used it twice, interestingly the glass bit did actually help polish the edge( or didn't do any damage as sharpness testing seemed the same maybe ever so slightly better)
I've not had such an obvious face palm moment in quite some time, needless to say i'm itching to get the blades on the right side as they are sharp, but come off a 6k( have an 8k, but poor quality so have been skipping this).

Thanked: 1936Feel comforted that I have heard of at least two other cases of this. You will find that 10-15 x strokes on this stone will serve you well. You may have to increase the amount of strokes since you are coming off 6k, but remember that it's what is considered a "fast" stone...meaning that it is very effective with every stroke. Works great as a touch up stone too!

Just had a quick go on the right side and you aren't wrong, doesn't take much, gave an awesome edge after a good stropping, still not as sticky as I would like, but I think I got lazy with the 6 k on this one and it might need a bit more, will put it under the scope tomorrow and see.

Thanked: 3795Yeah, you are not the only one to make this mistake. I was at a meet-up with a guy who wanted me to evaluate his GlassStones. After my first stroke on the hone, the guy said "well, I got my money's worth out of this meet-up." He was mortified by his mistake, but I assured him that I was certain he was not the only one to make this mistake.
After all, they are called "GlassStones!"

Good on ya for admitting that 'faux pas'! I was witness to it as well, from a fella who was giving us a honing demonstration!
You should have seen the looks and grins as he began rubbing the glass side on a big old DMT!
We let him down gently, he was embarrassed. Admitted he really should get out more."Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

We all had a laugh with it, including him. He had EVERY Shapton glass hone there was and had worked out a progression......
Had been shaving off the edges, said He!
I suppose I learned you need only the back of one to hone all the way through?"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
