Use your fingers to feel of it ! I know some have disagreed with using a finger earlier , but it works. Tongue would be a bad idea in this case even after washing it

Thanked: 481The only reason I disagree with the finger is you can feel grits as small as 5 microns. Which is actually really fine. BUT when we're talking about finishing stones, we're talking about stones that (should have) grit measuring 2 microns or less. For reference:

I guarantee you could pet and lick those problem coticules all day and never once notice the difference between them and one that works better/easier. But it made all the difference in the world at the edge and how to utilize the hone effectively.
