Thanked: 7I do like cotis and arks, they are smooth as all hell when done right. Seriously. But sometimes I get the feeling my cotis aren't as fine as they're hyped up to be. I can get good HHT and the razor is smooth... they're really not that consistent, for me. Tell you one thing, they WILL teach you how to X-stroke a razor.
My last hone session on a Las Petas, I only did X strokes and she took Foreva!

Thanked: 30Has anyone tried CrOx after a Norton 4/8k? In a vintage barber manual, Kosuke Iwasaki (yes, the maker of Iwasaki razors) claims that CrOx is needed to remove the false edge that's inevitably left behind from honing. I'd be curious if CrOx improves upon any just-honed edge.

Hi Julio. A Norton 8k shave is a very nice shave in my opinion. Much easier to get to shave ready then with a coticule until you've mastered that stone. I agree the magic can wear out so to speak and it's good to have a fall back that you know can't go wrong.
A pasted edge can greatly improve coticule keenness. Remember in my failed coticule edge thread at the CC where I recommended using metal polish on a linen or denim strop. Greatly improved coti edges that aren't quite there.

Last week you were praising the coticule and telling newbs to use them as their first stone. Just admit that you are a honing junkie. lol.
The 4/8 norton is a great stone that you can shave from. Everyone should have one. I think that you won't be happy with that as your finished edge. Get it and try it out. Compare the shaves off the 8k and your coticule. If I am right you will still be looking for a finisher. Then you will buy a Naniwa 12k which you will find a little harsh. Then you will try a Thuringian as a finisher. When you are done you will have a nice pile of rocks a great shaving razor and seeking your next stone. It does not end. Don't ask me how I know. Good luck and have fun.

Love the coticule, by inconsistent I'm talking 2/10 I can't hit. That's pretty good in my book. They give tremenduous shaves but if I can get there quicker, well--you're supposed to cosign my addiction, not pull my covers skdjfgbkldjfnbkdjfnbkljdfbkljdfblkdjfblkjdfb

Wow! That's almost exactly what I did nearly word for word! Started with a 4/8 Norton, CROX pasted leather to finish. Got the Naniwa 12K which I found a little harsh! CROX pasted felt strop to ease the Naniwa 12K, then on to the Thuringian... Last week I got a Coticule... it's like you're telling my story Haha!

Began with a Norton 4/8. Still with it. I have fondly referred to it as the 'poor man's coticule', however I DO have a Coti and use it on occasion. Whatever I use, I like the predictable nature of the stone in question, JMO.
