Thanked: 6AM Hone Co...
Check out this old barber hone that came with a razor I recently purchased. It was almost black all over so I scrubbed it in sudsy water and lapped both sides on a DMT. This is what was under all the funk. Can anybody tell me anything about it? I've heard of this company before. Aren't they the ones that made frictionite hones?

Could be a type of re-branded frictionite, better said made from AM Hone for that Company....
Could well be the same material. On the other hand there were different versions made of that "Mini Frictionite"███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███

Apparently this one was distributed through the Buckeye B. S. (barber supply) Co. I can't find anything on it. Could be pretty valuable or it could be a $5 piece of clay. Who knows? I like it for nostalgia purposes either way.

Thanked: 4829AM Hone Company made a lot of different hones. I believe that they made some really great hones, like the frictionite as well as lesser known and lesser quality hones. Modine has spent a lot of time sorting testing and grading barber hones from a lot of companies, and a lot of the AM Hone company hones as well. The company did go through several transformations, I believe they got bought by Pike and Pike later was bought by Norton.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

Thanked: 3795The American Hone Company was assisted in its original set-up by the Swaty company. Originally it was located in Olean, New York and was purchased and relocated to Moravia, Iowa in the mid 50s. A woman right of high school was trained by Swaty to make the hones in Moravia and she continued to do so for over 50 years, taking some of her hone making knowledge to her grave. Considering the conditions in which she worked, with extreme amounts of grit and binder dust in the air, using just a ventilation fan in the wall above the grit sifting screens, it is amazing that she lived as long as she did.
The made well over a hundred brands of barber hones. Many of which were re-branded for other companies and distributors.
To the best of my knowledge, it was never owned by Pike or Norton. It currently is owned by an SRP member.
