Thanked: 6Anybody care to venture a guess on this hone...
I just picked up this hone. The description merely said, "Welsh Slate." Nothing else. Nothing about Dragons Tongue or Llyn Melynllyn or Indigo Jones or anything specific. Just "Welsh Slate." Any hone hounds out there able to narrow it down more for me? It is a full 8" x 3".

Thanked: 6I've had a Zulu Grey before. It's nothing like that. This one is solid flat black with no gold flecks or orange swirls. I think it definitely is slate and probably what it was said to be--welsh slate. I just wondered if anybody could narrow it down more than that for me. Just from looking through images on google search it looks like Dragons Tongue.

If you've ever been to Wales you would understand that literally half of the place is littered with grey slate. In terms of rareness it's not.
This site has a map of some of the bigger historic quarries.
The History of Quarrying - Before the Industrial Revolution in the Slate Industry
As such I think limiting it to grey slate is about as accurate as you will get unless it has some colour or inclusions that can localise it.Real name, Blake

Use the "Advance " search box, top left, not the GOOGLE box. There are several threads on it "Welsh Slate". Many of us have them. Mine finishes quite well.

Thanked: 3795When you say that you "picked it up," was it off of ebay? There is guy in England, I think with initial's "AJ," who sells a lot of Welsh slate hones.

Thanked: 481Looks almost exactly like a Dragon's Tongue sold by AJ from Ebay. I say almost because the slurry that mine makes is practically white, but otherwise it's a spitting image.
