Sealing Naguras
For a few years now I've considered sealing my Naguras but finding the recommended sealant was quite tricky .
All my stones have lost there stamps over time.
Recently I purchased another Koma Nagura . This time I bought some Plastic sealant .
It worked a treat . I masked off the side I wanted to use and a few millimetres up the sides . Then I sprayed on a few coats .
I'm thinking of doing the rest just to keep them clean..

Have you tried shellac? More natural sealer(Breathable, but water tight) solution. With the added benefit of reletively easy removal with alchohol, but also long lating and easily touched up( new layer, easily mixes with the old). Just get the real flakes znd not the canned ready made one.
Hope this helps,

Thanked: 351I just used a small can of Zinsner Shellac in a can for sealing a large (8" x 3")Kiita. It works fine, just don't spill yer scotch while honing!
Personally, I could have purchased flakes and solvent, but unless it's furniture, I can't be bothered.... too costly for what it does. Now, Garret did one of my hones with urushi (sp?). That stuff is tough and beautiful, but also nasty to work with from what I understand.
Nope, I just use the premixed stuff, but I'll agree.. it's easy to repair or add another layer down the road, not to mention remove, with some rubbing alcohol.

For sure there are easier things to use, but not better. Not by a mile.
I was just suggesting something more narural, period correct, and very effective.
Flakes is cheaper than can version because once you open the can at best it will last one year. With the flakes you can make as much or as little you want(less waste) and store in the freezer indefinately. So if you buy can just to seal ,you will not use it all a probably throw most of it away. I make handcarved burl wood bowl and have tried many top end finishes. That is why Luthiers use it almost strictly, very high end finish. Hope this helps
By the way nice stones you have!
