    Lately, I've preferred to use a fine DMT (perforated surface) to create slurries on natural stones deemed necessary* (coticule, slate, honyama). Works well, the slurry being from the honing stone itself, and no real pressure is needed.

    *Like Slawman, sometimes I move into the "why is a slurry necessary?" camp.

    Honestly, if you have - and are using - synthetics in your progression it probably isn't necessary. It's just fun to play with. At least that's how I view it.
