Thanked: 3Info on this hone?
Picked up this hone at the local flea market for a good price. It was very oxidized(the original color is on the sides) I lapped it flat today. Yellow part seems very hard and I believe the lower is not for honing but just a backer. Did I stumble on a coticule?

Thanked: 3B
the backing looks like a piece of slate and not to be used for honing correct? I ran a scrap knife across the back part and it did not seem a material suitable for honing. The best part of finding this was it came in a package deal a Torry barbers notch, a pre 1891 Joseph Allen and sons with 3415 mark and the stone for $30.00 USD.

The backing is a type of stone similar to the yellow coticule top.
Coticules are found/mined between two layers of the purple side and it is called Belgian Blue .it has a different garnet content than the yellow and if I remember correctly they can or do run larger (the garnets )
