I guess my next question regarding the mystery rock is...you say it's a hard stone yes? What grade DMT did you use to build up the slurry? If it's the usual 325 the stone's surface might be left a bit roughed up.

Have you tried prepping the surface like some of us do Arkies and PHIGs to see if that makes a positive impact? I couldn't get an edge on my PHIGS to save my life until I polished the honing surface as fine as I could, then ran a steel blade over it a few hundred laps to complete the burnish. Now it cuts smooth enough to improve a Norton 8k edge, originally I couldn't get anything good from the rock.

    I didn't raise a slurry. That's a pic from the bay.
The surface is quite smooth but not burnished for sure. I could give it a go for sure.
    What's a PHIG?
I'll have to read up on stone polishing/prep. Hmmm, I'm wondering if I checked flatness on this one.

People's Hone of Indeterminate Grit, AKA C12k, Guangxi hone, etc. Some of them are like Arkies, very hard and benefit from being polished (up to 2k at least) then burnished with a knife blade or something similar. Same for Arkies, most of us find the Black/Translucent ones work better with a burnish.

I can't help ID it but I will say that it looks pretty cool and would be fun to hone on. It has 'personality'

Honed a Boker on it. It was crazy sharp. I'd say is in the 3k to 4k range and pretty fast. I finished it with my coticule bout and test drove that today. Nice shave. Not cold steel and whiskers fall off like my shave ready W&B 6/8 gold standard but a nice close shave. I did compare it with a 4/8 Ontario that was my first sucess with a coti hone and it was compareable. Nice shave, a bit more burn with aftershave than I'd like. It might be the razor, not sure.
