    Default Progressing from 3k

It is my birthday on Thursday and I am going to be getting a naniwa pro 1k, 3k and DMT 325.

This will kick things up a notch for me at the bottom end and make a really consistent edge to work with.

would 3k be an acceptable jump to a translucent Arkansas and a lot of laps or should I progress higher?

I don't have to Nani 5k pro. It could always be had in the future.

I want to jump from the lowest possible grit without it taking hours upon hours. I don't mind using pressure to speed things up on the Arkansas.

    Thoughts, comments, concerns?

What I've learned from SRP, and other sites and videos, is take your initial honing out to 8k then commence on to your finishers. Naturals or otherwise.

BTW, loading in Houston now. Headed to Port Hope, ON for Thursday delivery.
A little advice: Don't impede an 80,000 lbs. 18 wheeler tanker carrying hazardous chemicals.

That’s a good question, a big jump. Problem is a 3-4k will refine a bevel, considerably, but the edge is not straight.

I have never done that, so could not say.

So, you will have to remove a fair amount of steel, to straighten the edge. A hard ark or 8k would do it quickly…

If you used soap on your ark and did circles and or half laps with pressure, maybe. Then switch to Smiths or Ballistol and light pressure.

    It will be interesting.

If you don't want it to take hours, then I would suggest progressing higher. If you only wish to consider adding one more hone, you might want to consider skipping the 5k and instead get an 8k. I'm normally a fan of the smallest possible jumps but I'm going off of the parameters you have provided. I think the 3k to 8k to Ark is a lot more doable than the 3k to Ark jump.

There is no Pro 8k but there are other good options, including the Naniwa Specialty 8k.

It depends on how you want to go about it really.

I've done 1K to Translucent w/ Coticule slurry dilutions to polish away all the 1K stria. I've also used my Dragon's Tongue rubbing stone to create a slurry on the Translucent for the same purpose. You can also do 1K > 3K > Coticule > Translucent. And of course from the 3K I imagine you could bounce over to your Hard Ark, then up to the Translucent.

Many ways to skin a cat, just a matter of deciding which way suits you best.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I want to make it easier on myself. Problem is I haven't been able to stick with synthetics for any long period of time. I am not going to give up on them this time. Will look for an 8k. Maybe the Snow White?

I would recommend getting the 5k instead of the 3k. It's not a big jump from 1k and it will put you on the next stone with a cleaner edge.

    Yes that

    I go 1-5-10 - Finisher nearly everyday

The 1k - 5k jump on the Pro/Chosera is easy and I would feel comfortable going 1-5 - Finisher on a Personal razor, one that I could adjust the next day if needed..

Tc also has a good idea 1k Pro to the 3/8 SS to the finisher that would be a good setup
