Kind of looks like a purple Vermont slate.

Thanked: 351It might be a metal engravers hone.... gravers are quite narrow, but need to be sharp and smooth... then again, they are usually made from high speed steel, perhaps a bit tough for coticule hones?!?!?! I have no idea what they used back in the day before HS steel.
Old time surgeons scalpels needed to be sharpened, and often coticules were used. I think this hone is going to be hard to nail down.... there are plenty of possible uses, but coming up with a single "It has to be" answer, might not be possible.
Regards

Thanked: 77That one's very interesting. When I got it it had parallel scratches in the face of the hone the disappeared when I cleaned it off with a Scotch-Brite pad. I'm still waiting to get better pictures in the sunlight work has been in the way. It would probably also help if I posted pictures of before I cleaned it. EBay item #162369992996

Thanked: 351I'm afraid I cannot bring up that item using just the number for some reason. Perhaps it's because of the particular Ebay server you were using?!?!? I get nothing on the Canadian Ebay server.... ie. ebay.ca

Thanked: 351OK, I managed to dig it up on the US Ebay site..... Unfortunately, the additional pictures don't really give me a feel for what it was used for originally. Perhaps it was used for one thing and someone else tried to use it in a different manner.
To me..... I will place a very small wager on it being either an engravers hone or a surgeons hone..... but I will say, the wager is sub $1!
I honestly don't know... I'm just tossing out what I can think of. For all I know, it was a razor hone inside a 18th Century Gentleman's Necessary kit, of which I have ever only seen one and I'm dying to replicate it. It was a French officers necessary kit I believe, and it did not contain a hone, but it did have 2 straight razors and an assortment of other ivory and silver items necessary for daily living on the battle field for an officer. All inside a beautiful wooden box lined with silk.....<sigh>
