Thanked: 2Hard Steel on Coticule
Hi all
For the last decade I have honed my razors on a single coticule (modern), I know my stone, have honed my Dovo, Filarmonica, Friodur and TI getting great edges and shaves for years.
I have recently acquire a very lightly used PUMA 39 SR. Honing it was a PITA I have never experienced with the coticule, took me almost an hour to get it shave ready. HHT 3/4 right from the stone.
Some stropping, and shave test. It shredded my face. Very close shave but lots of irritation. Second shave and 100 laps on strop, considerably better.
This razor is the hardest steel I have encountered, any experience regarding using coticule and hard steels?

That's odd. I have/had several Pumas and they take and hold an edge very well but were not anywhere near as hard as TI, Fillys or Friodurs.
Is it full hollow? Is it a 'singer'? You may be using too MUCH pressure if you are used to the other blades.
As far as coticules and hard steel razors, mine struggles with Hart and PRC razors as well as Heljestrands. All of which I consider to be among the hardest.

Thanked: 2Its a 6/8 half hollow.
I really dont think its too much pressure, since I did get it to be sharp as hell, but took a long way to get there. You can feel the feedback on the stone and the metal the goes into the slurry. This one was the slowest to hone which I translate to it being a hard steel (may be wrongfully). Tha is as opposed to my Full hollow 6/8 friodur, took no more than 15 minutes start to finish.

Thanked: 286I my self have had a thew Pumas and the seemed one of easiest brands and seem to take a very good edge. I use a coticule. I do no the puma does take a very keen edge . I no what you mean sometimes even of the coticule the edge can be sharp but not feel like it should on the skin. I usually go back to a tint of slurry for ten strokes to back the edge down.
Mine were fullhollows
