Thread: Is this a nice home?

I have option of getting this coticule, what do you guys think of it. Think this would be a nice hone to own?

What are the dimensions? I personally wouldn't buy it with those large black inclusions on the surface unless it was dirt cheap or unless I could return it if not satisfied.

close to 4 inches wide and longest point is about 5.5 inches

That's a usable size, but I still have serious reservations about the black inclusions on the surface. It's hard enough finding a coticule thats suitable for razor finishing - why risk buying a stone with such blatant flaws?

Was not sure if flaws would have an effect on honing or not so thought I would ask

There are flawless ones that are duds for razors, then there are flawed ones that hone like a dream. Really the only way to know for sure is to hone on the stone. That said, I wouldn't knowingly buy a 'flawed' one without either the chance to test first, or the ability to return for refund if it wasn't satisfactory. Unless the price was right or I just had money I was willing to gamble with.

The black segments are not concerning. Very common and some fine coticules have them. But the Orange brown streaks are concerning to me. Also it appears there may be a crack or two and or some flaking.
All in all I agree I would not buy unless I could return. Good luck!

Manganese inclusions are fine.. the only knes I avoid are 90 degree to the honing track. Even if there are voids in the inclusions, just letting the stone drink thin ca glue, allowing it to cure and then lapping will resolve that in short order and do no harm to the edge.
