Thanked: 3what else?
I currently use a kuromaku 1k, Goken Fuji 4k, Goken Fuji 8K, and an ILR 12-15K. Can I getter a different edge adding anything to the bunch, ie feel, looks, and possibly performance? I am not complaining about the wonderful edge I get off these stones but want to explore out of my safe zone but at the same time not breaking the bank on a $250+ JNAT.

Can't really say where to go from there as I've not tried an ILR stone. If you're just looking to play with something different, there are Welsh slates from AJ on Ebay. Some sort of synthetic 12K, like the Kuromaku or a Naniwa Super Stone. Arkansas stones, coticules, the humble Cnat...lots of things you can try out. Question is what are you trying to achieve?

If you're already getting a "wonderful edge" from the stones you have, maybe heed Glen's (gssixgun) advice and get to know your current hones intimately before submitting to HAD. He strongly suggests that it's pretty difficult to beat the edge off of a Naniwa 12k at any price, so if your 12-15k is somewhat comparable, then see to getting the most out of it before buying another hone.
Every time I find myself leaning towards a HAD purchase, I hear Glen's voice in my head encouraging me to be strong and resist the temptation. Scary, huh?--Mark

Thanked: 4826I have many natural finishers in my hone inventory. I use the same one most times, because I know how to get a great edge with it overtime. The others I toy with periodically but until you have a full on relationship with them they can seem finicky. I am also of the opinion that if you are getting great edge, what more do you want. If you are merely looking to experiment, pick another natural hone, any one and then learn that hone intimately and then get another. Coti's and Jnats tend to be the largest rabbit holes out there, i part because there are so many variables with them.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
