Thanked: 40I use a Naniwa Gouken 4k "Hayabusa" after my Naniwa Pro 1K and 3K. It only cost $ 50 AU, (which is a third of what the 3K Pro cost).
If I didn’t have that I would have gone for the Shapton “'Kuromaku” 5K (still might get it actually).

I'd contact naniwa. They might send a free replacement if there is plenty of meat left on it, as it sounds like a binder defect.

I'm very happy with my kuromaku stones. Very nice price point and they work very well. Never used chosera so I can't give any comparison info.

Thanked: 52Airportcopper:
If you decide to contact Naniwa please keep us informed about the outcome.
Some of us are interested in what this large company is willing to do to correct these issues.

The old faithful SRP workhorse Norton 4k single grit, and an 8k single grit. Have mine for years. Still effective. Only the 4k needs soaking and they stay flat once lapped until you hone enough to warrant lapping. They are 1" thick and you can turn it on its side for warped blades.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 481I'll second all of the above. I've got a Kuromaku (Japanese version of Pro Ceramics) 1/2/5/12K set, and of course the tried and true Norton 1/4/8. I'd say the difference between the Norton 4K and Shapton 5K is about what you'd expect to see comparing a 4K hone to a 5K hone. Only thing I'd say the Shapton set has over the Norton set is it's all splash 'n go, and it ends at 12K. I think either set would out last me, truth be told.
