    Default A little help needed: hone identification

    Hi folks, I picked up this hone a week ago for a couple bucks at a flea market. It was in with rusty tools and such, very dirty. I figured it for a slate of some sort and just got around to cleaning and lapping it today. There's still some scratch marks from lapping and I might need to do more, but it was hard lapping.

    Now I don't know what to think because it seems pretty hard for a slate, it's a deep purple color, the slurry was purple, and it has these blue/green spots in places (which I didn't see when I bought it). It feels very fine, measures about 8 1/4 x 1 7/8 x 1/2. Anybody wanna take a stab at identifying it? Thanks

    Are there saw marks on the sides or the ends by chance...? I have an inkling, but slates are sort of common.

    It looks most likely like a Purple Welsh slate.....

    I don't see any saw marks, the sides are pretty smooth. OK, so probably Purple Welsh slate - I've heard of that but what is 'Yellow Lake' referring to? Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated.

    Yellow Lake stones are Welsh slates. Finishing stone, originally used as oil stone but mine seems happy with water. I'm still tinkering with it, but my vintage Yellow Lake stone seems to be working more or less on par with my Purple Slate sold by AJ on Ebay.
