I spoke with Kim earlier this week. She was telling me about the progress on the warehouse since the fire. Great people there.

I hope not too much progress. It was on that area I parked my big rig last time I was there. Not a lot of room there to get turned around. We'll figure it out.

Will do. I didn't do a very good job last time on the outside grounds. Anything in particular?

I guess it would be nice to have pictures of all the staff there. Kim and the workers. It is nice put a face to the person on the phone and see who is working the stones. And of course THE ROCKS

Big boulders, the bulidings, equipment, people, etc.

    Even more of the same.

I am not a fan of Arkies but they were my only hones before I met SRP. I had speckled one, a pure white one and a surgical black. Got them from Smith's (hope that does not disqualify my question), together with a bottle of their honing oil.
My problem was that after using them a few times the pores would be clogged up with swarf and oil making them even slower.
I used to put them in the dishwasher. Eventually I was so fed up that I started using them with water.

My question: how do they recommend you remove the gunge, how to clean the stone?

I can't speak for Dans but I have cleaned up many an Arkansas stone and the way that works best for me is to boil them in a pot with a wash cloth on the bottom to prevent the stone from bouncing around. Then I take a wire brush and detergent and scrub until clean. I have also used bar keepers friend, simple green, dishwasher, kerosene, and loose grit to lap them. More oil to lift the particles out of the pores and wipe clean also works to a point.

Once I started using ballistol oil/water mix my stones never clog or get dirty anymore and always look brand new.

Use an oil thick enough to carry the particles away. The surface of the stone will always slow down as the particles dull since they don't get released.

The flip side of that is that you can use some pressure on the stones and not ruin an edge. Indiscriminate scrubbing of a razor on a suitably fine hone will do not much more than continue to burnish the lines/stria away.

I hate to say this, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I won't be going to Dan's tomorrow. There was a major accident on I-40 involving multiple big rigs, autos, multiple deaths, crossing both directions. All traffic was redirected. I cut across Arkansas to the SW which took me away from Hot Springs. I called to cancel the appointment and assured the ladies "I shall return."
