Norton Pike Combination Hone
Can anyone tell me the approx grit ratings for the red and black side of the stone that goes in this box??

Hope that Modine will chime in: he does a lot of testing with synthetic hones. If he doesn't send him a PM. Is this the infamous combi hone that axmen pay a fortune for?

Thanked: 3795One side is fine and other is finer.
Grit ratings on barber hones are meaningless.
Does it have the oval Norton imprint?

Thanked: 481I have that hone. Red side should be finer if I remember right. It's a pretty sweet little barber hone. The final finish off mine was above 8k, so I was happy with it.
I'm still working out what I think of the coarse side. I haven't used it as much, it seems pretty slow though. I can get more accomplished with my Norton 8k, but that could just be the advantage of nearly twice the surface area.

Thanked: 13What's the deal with the Norton Combi that the ax men look for? I've heard that mentioned but could never figure out what it means.

Thanked: 156Oh... I belive the norton razor hone is what those ax men look for...looks somilar to this but has a biz that says Norton Razor Hone and the oval Norton logo on the black side.
The stone is renowned for beeing notoriously fast and extremly fine at the same time...some even compare the black fine side to the gokumio 20k or shapton 30k...sadly when asked Norton said they have lost the stone recipe over the years and cant...wont ever make anything like that evaa)
