Thread: Chromium oxide question

The chromium oxide I'm using is the Formax brand, judging from the scratches I'm seeing on the razor bevel, I don't think this CrOX has good particle size consistency. Could someone recommend a different brand and perhaps a source for a "razor grade" CrOx paste? Or am I all wet?

Hand american used to sell graded 0.5 powder, and then star shaving passed it along without much mark up.

The formax crayon is 70% al-ox (or thereabouts) and 30% chrome ox. It's not made for razors or optical honing, so the al-ox is added to make it cut faster (it's actually quite nice for sharpening tools that need to be sharpened often because it's faster).

Look around online for powder. You can mix it with mineral oil (baby oil) to apply it or make a paste, and you should get far more for your money buying graded powder than paste.

You should be able to find 0.3 and 0.5 micron without much trouble.

(that said, the formax bar is more than fine enough to finish a razor - the spider webbing and potential tiny nicks that might occur due to the al-ox particles is cosmetic).

Also, there are more expensive crox only wax bars, like livi's and i'm sure some other branded razor items. The graded pigment is much cheaper, but if you like the convenience of a stick that someone else made, you spend your money the way you desire to and it's nobody's business.

Maggard's or Whipped Dog.

SRD Spray is also good stuff.

Kremer pigments has the best .3 powder I have ever used and you get a truckload for a penny. You have to look at their data sheets to pick the one graded .3 but it is worth the effort. Or you can pay a dollar more for whipped dogs since he uses Kremer pigments.
