Default Defective Barber hones and what to look for.

Here is the “Raven” Barber hone for example only. This particular barber hone has deteriorated to the point where it can no longer be used. See below. Some signs and indicators that a Barber hone has oxidized and declined in performance are,

⦁ A chalky white appearance on the surface of the hone.
⦁ A waxy texture to the hone, or odor.
⦁ Obvious crumbling and separation of the hone surface.

Barber hones that display any of these characteristics are questionable. Pass on Barber hones that have been left sitting in a display case exposed to direct sunlight. Lapping away the oxidized layer may expose fresh material or it will determine the extent of deterioration. (Lapping a barber hone will be discussed later).

Oxidized synthetic hones can not be reconstituted to their original state. To increase the longevity of your hones and stones protect them from chemical exposure, extreme temperatures and U.V. light.
