Thread: Help with some stone ID's please

Hi guys,

I've found an interesting set of stones that I have have very little knowledge about. The seller doesn't know much about them either.
The stone on the right looks like a Welsh purple slate, the second from the left looks like a slate as well (perhaps a dark grey Welsh slate or Dragon's Tongue?!).
No idea on the green ones.
What do you guys think?

All slates

The one on the right is cut very much like the Welsh purple slates that A-J sells on the 'Bay. From the picture, and with the accompanying slurry stone, I'd be inclined to think it is one. I like his Welsh purples a lot, used with water only (no slurry) or with oil after a coticule.

Yep, these are very similar to some slate tool hones I have. the hole on the one on the left is very similar to one I have, supposedly so the woodworker could hang it up in the shop out of the way once upon a time.

Yup, the one of the right does look identical to AJ's purple Welsh (I have the 3 stone set from him). Apart from the general aspect, even the beveling of the edges seems identical.

Any ideas on the origin/approximate grit/qualities of the other 3?

slate can come from almost anywhere. the one with the hole that is similar to mine I know was from the UK and used by a woodworker for his planing blades. I dont have an exact grit, but most fine woodworkers would take their blades to anything from 4-8k I believe and then strop. they may be ok for use on a razor, but only trying will tell you that.

The long thin one is a so-called Schwedenstein. A thuringin hone but not the same than the Escher hones. This small thin hones had been mounted on wooden razor boxes. Search for Swedenstein here in SRP and you will find some examples.

the one on the right looks the same colour as the BBW side on my vintage 'La Veinette' coti - cld it be a Belgian Blue ?
