SWATY Franz Swaty – Marburg Austria barber hone test
Here is the Swaty Marburg Austria barber hone being tested. Commonly refered to as the 2 line Swaty it is single sided and measures 5”Lx 2”W x 7/16”H and is a softer darker brown material than the Swaty Wahring version. No other literature came with this hone.
Two identical King Midas Extra Good razors were chosen to test this Barber hone. Both razors were taken to a 1K-4K-Norton 8K level. One of the razors was then progressed to the approx. 15K level on a much finer stone. The edges were visually inspected at 100X magnification at each interval.
8 X-laps, strokes or passes were made with each razor on the Swaty Marburg Hone to see if it would improve or degrade the razor taken to the Norton 8K edge and the razor honed to the approx. 15K edge.
Conclusion, the Swaty Marburg 2 line model barber hone did not improve edge off an 8K Norton. This is a softer slower cutting barber hone that starts to cut after 8 laps. Another 8 laps were done and the edge showed no improvement and no sign of a wire edge forming when observed again under 100X magnification. Another 24 laps were done to see if the edge would start deforming. After 56 laps the edge started to show signs of slight deformation occurring.
