Default TYTEX Carbo #42 Barber hone.

Here is yet another American Hone Co. barber hone called the TYTEX Carbo. Probably their offering into the Carborundum line of barber hones. This one sided light weight hone measures 4”L x 2”W x 7/16”H. Primary abrasive is 3F Carbolon Light color, silicon carbide and garnet.

Two identical King Midas Extra Good razors were chosen to test this Barber hone. Both razors were taken to a 1K-4K-8K level. One of the razors was then progressed to the approx. 15K level on a much finer stone. The edges were visually inspected at 100X magnification at each interval.

8 X-laps, strokes or passes were made with each razor on the TYTEX hone to see if it would improve or degrade the razor taken to the 8K edge and the razor honed to the approx. 15K edge.

Conclusion: the TYTEX Carbo barber hone maintained the edge off an 8K. A wire edge was starting to form this is an aggressive razor hone and recommend that 4 to 6 very light passes be done. While some carborundum products can be quite harsh this one is much mellower when using. With a light touch, it may slightly improve on an 8K edge. This hone would be good candidate for stainless, cast or frozen steels IMO. Stropping on leather or paste would smooth the edge even more.
