Thread: GOLD Bug Barber hone test

This is the GOLD BUG Barber hone from M.O. Brittain out of Alexandria, La. Hone was found in the wild and no other instructions were present. If you have any additional documentation about this barber hone, please feel free to post. This is a high performance one sided hone that rivals the 00 Frictionite and measures 2” W x 5-1/4” L x 7/16” H.

Two identical King Midas Extra Good razors were chosen to test this barber hone. Both razors were taken to a 1K-3K-8K Norton level. One of the razors was then progressed to the approx. 15K level. The edges were visually inspected at 100X magnification at each interval.

8 X-laps, strokes or passes were made with each razor on the GOLD BUG barber hone with soap lather to see if it would improve the razor taken to the 8K Norton edge and the razor honed to the approx. 15K edge.

Conclusion: Due to the high quality of the GOLD BUG barber hone by M.O. Brittain of Alexandria Louisiana identical “high temper” American steel razors were tested. The razors edge was significantly improved off the 8K Norton. No more than 8 laps should be required with this hone. This is a fast cutting, effective synthetic hone that leaves uniform abrasion patterns. It will easily refresh without deforming or degrading the approx. 15K edge. Stropping on leather only would be adequate to prep the edge for shaving.
