    Default Arkie question about trans...

Just looking at a used Dans stone. In the pics it shows its black with white streaks and translucent to about 1/8". If it was just a hard stone, not the finest grade, would it still be translucent? If this is the finest grade then its a good price but if its a step down, like below the trans stones then its a standard price. So are they all somewhat translucent if you put a flashlight against them?

So what do you arkie users have to say?

I'd have to see the pics, but from the description it sounds like a surgical Black, not a Translucent. None of the lesser grade stones that I have allow any light to transfer. I DO however have a black stone that allows about as much light to transfer as you describe, and a grey translucent that does the same.

Well, you already got your answer that it is not a translucent stone but to add to the information of this site I wanted to state that my Hard Arkansas is slightly translucent so it is not impossible for stones of less density to be translucent at the edges but like Marshall points out, it is not the norm either. You did the right thing Jerry and went straight to the proverbial horse.

Come on guys, I've written extensively on this. It is probably an Arkansas True Hard, every bit rated like a Hard Black (surgical black) and Translucent. All three classes are rated +/- 2.5 gravity. They are they same but for color. Again, Arkansas True Hards are every bit the equal of Translucent and Hard Black.

If Dan's says your stone isn't a True Hard, disregard above.

Marshall, please post a picture of your green candy.

Thanks guys. Just been looking for a deal on a new type of finisher to add to the collection
I plan on getting an arkie and thuri but with my shacky hands i need to have some size. Im happy with what i have but if i ran across a quality finisher 9f the size i need for the job and my abilities then ill get one. Until then ill wait for that good deal to come.

Ive not had much luck with natural stones but id still like to have the option and ability to work with one when i yet the chance. Ive been loaned a few from great members here at SRP but i need to own some.

    Thanks for your comments.
