    Refresh a stone, you don't need more. Once cleaned of any grit from your plate or sand paper or SIC. The stone is what it is, and doesn't even need to be dead flat. The better results from honing come from the guy doing the honing. Tc

    4k rougher in this instance. And yet I wonder, how to make a Norton 4000 rougher and a Norton 8000 finer?

    How to make a Norton 4k rougher...pick up a 1K. How to make a 8k finer...pick up a 16 or 20K. Simple really!

    Okay, I think I get it; use the 1k to dress the 4k side and the 16k or 20k to dress the 8k side as needed.
