    Start with one hone. I recommend either a barber hone, a coticule, or a Naniwa Specialty 12k, but really anything that can be used as a finisher. In general, use it as a touch up hone to start with. KEEPING a razor sharp with a hone is a good way to learn some of the most essential aspects of honing.

    Another ideal option is to find someone close enough to you so that you can try their hones.
