    Default Water or Naked

I just got a Naniwa 12K finishing stone. Can I use water with it or nothing at all?

You use water with all whetstones such as the Naniwa 12k. However, a new stone likely requires lapping to ensure a flat working surface. I use a DMT 325 diamond plate in a stone-holder to accomplish this with all of my hones. You can check the archives here for instructions on lapping your stone using sandpaper if you don't have a diamond plate.

You must use water it gives you the required lubrication element, I'm not being sarcastic when I state the obvious the word Waterstone is a bit of a giveaway.
