Thanked: 10norton jb crystolon?
got a used one from the auction site for a steal
mainly bought it for chef knives, removing metal, nick removal for straight razors
i was able to lap it flat, but it got sticky and mucky, pretty sure i raised old oil and dirt
any reason not to soak in some water and simple green to clean it up?

Certainly would not hurt. I remember some using oven cleaner if it is bad.

Thanked: 13No reason. Simple green in US or any oven cleaning stuff for the rest of the world. I use something very powerful for the oven, it takes 1-2 nights to get even the most oil soaked stones as clean as new, but it's from Europe.

Those crystolon stones are pretty much indestructible. I don’t think you will hurt it.
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Thanked: 3215On porous stones like Crystolon, other Silicone Carbide or India stones, I hose down with dollar store oven cleaner, then soak in Mineral Spirits an old Tupperware sealed container works well to soak overnight for a single stone and will remove the bulk of the oil.
Then soak in Simple Green or Awsome from the dollar store, $3 a gallon and water to remove the rest of the oil and the mineral spirits smell.
Awsome is a bit more aggressive than Simple Green and a bit cheaper, they both work.
